Flirting is often used as a means of letting another person know that you are attracted to them and interested in them in a romantic sense. It can be expressed by means of words, touch or body language. It can be the easiest way to get to know someone as flirting will often break the ice and put both people more at ease with one another. Some methods of flirting include smiling suggestively, touching someone’s arm, giggling, teasing and making eye contact.
Methods of flirting vary from culture to culture. In some cultures, flirting of any kind between an unmarried man and woman is strictly forbidden and even punishable. For example, in the United States eye contact is probably the most common method of flirting. In China and Japan a woman who makes eye contact is seen to be rude and disrespectful. In Muslim countries eye contact is viewed as sexual in nature, meaning that the woman wants that man in a sexual way. It is forbidden for any woman to have eye contact with any man except for her husband in many Muslim communities.
